Abstract

ABSTRACT

Engender a Mafioso entrepreneurship

The violent protection has become to be a new criminal entrepreneurial reality in the south of Italy, Russia, and Colombia. Studying the rising of a new branch of entrepreneurs devoted to impose forced protection in Medellin and drawing on studies by Gambetta in Italy; Volkov in Russia and Gottschalk, we argue that the Mafia, inspired by neoliberal market restructuring takes up, expands and manages violent protection services in a context that is not limited to the narrow framework of the underworld and “black market”, or to scenarios where illegal or “non-formal” economic activity is carried out.
