Abstract

URIBE'S FALTERING POLITICAL ECONOMY
When one chooses to look not at state announcements or popular media reports but rather the tangible facts on the ground, it becomes more than apparent that Álvaro Uribe Vélez has failed to live up to his principal fi rstterm electoral promise. Prior to becoming president in 2002, Uribe pledged to create a sustained model of national security for Colombia by defeating the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – People’s Army (FARC-EP). To the contrary, evidence shows that a clear escalation of the FARC-EP has been acknowledged over the past few years, leaving the Uribe administration in a comprised position. However, this seemingly military dilemma, while related, has greatly masked other pressing issues of contemporary national politicaleconomic restructuring, which have resulted in a growing opposition toward the state from various sectors of Colombian society. The following sheds light on the forthcoming complexities and diffi cult challenges facing the Uribe administration, challenges that could not only threaten the political stability of the current government but Colombia’s conventional political arena.
Key Words: Economic policy, Protracted Bilateral Trade, Labour Conditions, Farc-EP, Democratic Security
